Michael Jordan & Dwayne Wade holding up the 25th Anniversary Air Jordan shoes
Dwayne Wade, a Finals MVP, a five-time All-Star, and one of the most accomplished and popular stars in the NBA, will be wearing Nike's 25th anniversary Air Jordan shoes for the debut. Dwayne Wade is absolutely exstatic. And, the move to bring Dwayne Wade into the Air Jordan lineup is probably another one of the best marketing moves in the athletic shoe industry for the Nike brand.
Every since Michael Jordan joined the Nike brand, basketball shoe sales rocketed for Nike. The brand quickly became the #1 brand for basketball shoes and is now one of the biggest, if not the biggest, shoe brand in the world. Even with Michael retired, the legend lives on with the Air Jordan. It seems that every basketball player who wants to "take his/her game to the next level" wants to wear the Air Jordans. For those who have seen Michael Jordan play, whether live or on TV, we know how great he is... we all probably tried to be "just like Michael".
I think the move to bring in Dwayne Wade into the Air Jordan family is absolutely a great move for the brand. In addition to being a greatly admired basketball player, the guy is worth the money. He led the league in jersey sales for almost two years at one point in his career. So, we know he can sell. More importantly, he is a winner, a great character, and quite possibly the best is still yet to come. This would be fantastic for Nike. If Dwayne Wade wins another championship or two or three, his legend will only grow... as will the Air Jordan shoes.
Great move, Nike! And, congratulations to Dwayne Wade, a native from Chicago, who grew up idolizing the man who made famous the #23. Here are a few comments made by Dwayne Wade about representing the brand and being able to debut the 25th anniversary shoes:

- "I was in awe, because I know what it means to not only be a part of Jordan Brand but really represent Michael on the court in the shoe he would wear"

I guess we will all be waiting to our pair of D-Wade shoes by the Air Jordan brand. It will be quite interesting to see how much value or impact he might bring to the Nike stock. Is Jim Cramer from Mad Money around??
