I'm Going Back to Firefox - It's Just Better Than Chrome
Written by Mergen
Thursday, 22 October 2009 21:35

For about two weeks, I used Google Chrome as my "default browser".  Now, I am back to using Mozilla Firefox as my main and "default browser".  It's just simply a better browser.  Here are my three major reasons for going back to Firefox.

#1. Firefox is safer

With all of the tools, plugins, and other things available to protect Firefox, Mozilla's browser becomes a much safer browser.

For example, Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster, two great programs for immunizing for, or preventing the installation of, spyware program installation, works on Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera.  However, these programs do NOT work with Google Chrome.  As a result, when I scanned my local drive with Spybot two days ago, 26 tracking cookies were found with all 26 being installed onGoogle Chrome.  Firefox and Opera had nothing on them.  Please note that I used Firefox nearly as much or maybe even more since my last system scan for spyware and tracking cookies.

#2. I Like Options and Customizing as I Wish

Listen, as much as I like Chrome's beautiful interface and maybe seemingly faster browsing, Google has NOTHING on Firefox when it comes to the extensions.  I can customize my Firefox ANY way I want.  There are literally thousands and thousands of extensions with at least hundreds being a TOP NOTCH very high quality plugins/add-ons.

The most important thing for me here is that I can setup Firefox to have EVERYTHING I need to get my work done, whereas I cannot easily do all my work efficiently and fast on Chrome.  For me, Chrome is simply a great browser, whereas Firefox is my workhorse; it's my work tool.  Here's why: since we do internet marketing and web development work, I really like having the FireFTP, Echofon, Flashblock, Web Developer, and some internet marketing tools right on my browser.  With these tools, I have everything I need to get my work done.  Again, Google Chrome does NOT even come CLOSE to matching what I can do with Mozilla Firefox.

#3. Google Apps Works Better on Firefox

This should be a slap in the face for Google!  Eric Schmidt should rethink his tweet declarations of "how he loves Chrome so much".

This is true.  Google Spreadsheets and Google Calendar work better on Mozilla Firefox.  With Google Chrome, editng and obtaining information from the Spreadsheet cells are more cumbersome.  This is my personal opinion, but DO try them out yourself.  I think, more likely than not, you will agree with me.

Furthermore, the Google Calendar is error-prone on Google Chrome.  Ironic isn't it?  The problem I have is that, often, it takes 3-5 times to get the right event detail to show up.  When I clck on a calendar event, the wrong one shows up.  When I do it again, the wrong one yet again shows up.  Does ANYONE ELSE have this problem?  I wonder if this issue has to do with the fact that some of my events are written in cyrillic.

#4. Google Chrome Crashes Too Often

Thanks to Mend-Orshih's comment, I will add that Google Chrome does crash all too frequently (at least in his and my experience), and it is often verry annoying (2009/10/28).  Personally, I had my entire computer shut down on a few times that the Chrome crashed.  If the browser crashed by itself, it would not have been too bad, but the entire computer getting shut down?  I am not too thrilled about that.

Final notes

Both browsers were on their latest versions when I tested them over the past 2-3 weeks.  Google Chrome does tend to be faster, as per Mike's comment from eCommerceCircle.

Hi Mergen,

Great write up, thanks for sharing your experiences.

I've used Firefox for about 3-4 years until Google Chrome came out. It may just be a personal preference, but I like that Chrome is very lightweight and does take use a lot of system resources.

In my experience, Chrome seems much faster (especially with tools like the new AdWords interface.

Hey Michael,

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I think Google Chrome is faster, especially with on-page ajax loads.

BTW, do you use or have you used Joomla? Did you see our new plugin that we just released? It's at webguru-co.com/resources.

Cheers!

I am not currently using Joomla for any projects, but I can see how this is helpful. There are similar plugins for WordPress which are extremely helpful as well.

Hello Mergen!
Great post! I like when you say Firefox is your workhorse! That is really true because of its extentions, plugins and add-ons. They are really convenient. And also Chrome crashs more often than Firefox does, and it really bugs me.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hi Mend-Orshikh, I COMPLETELY AGREE with you. That is one thing I forgot to mention: Google Chrome does crash way too often. I even had my entire computer shut down a few times because I was opening a site on Chrome. This is probably something I should have mentioned.

You welcome. Glad you enjoyed the post! Thank you for commenting!

I was a big Firefox guy for a couple of years, but got tired of the slowness which usually came from certain extensions that I was using. So I switched to chrome. It was fast and not the resource hog that FF was. After almost a year, I'm thinking of moving back to FF because I've been having many issues with chrome. Pages locking up, cookies not saving information, etc... I've uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome 4 times and I still end up with the same issues. FF was slow, but I never had the issues I have with chrome.

That's really interesting. I wonder why you are having these issues in Chrome now and Firefox before
