Chocolate Bar Packaging - Face Up or Face Down in the Wrapper?
Written by Mergen

Recently I had a tasty chocolate bar - Kraft's Alpen Gold with Raisins & Nuts flavor.  After following the wrapper instructions to open the bar, a thought came to me -- if I am instructed to open the candy bar from the back, shouldn't the candy bar be facing up when I open the bar?  In other words, shouldn't the manufacturer's wrap the candy upside down, so that when people open the chocolate candy bar wrapper, it appears up?

What're your thoughts?

Well, let me first share the photos.

Kraft Alpen Gold wrapper instructions
Instructions on how to open the chocolate bar wrapper (Kraft's Alpen Gold). This is
on the back.

The chocolate bar is facing DOWN
Following the instructions and opening from the back reveals that the chocolate bar is
facing DOWN.  There is no visual appeal!!!

I am looking at the back of something rather than the visually appealing front!  Having the chocolate's back staring at me is not sexy.  ;)  BTW, please excuse me for taking a bite before I decided to take the photo; I really wanted to have a bite I guess. hahaha.  And, apparently, I was so happy with the bite of chocolate that I couldn't properly zoom on the photo shoot.  :D  In any case, you get my thoughts on the packaging.  Below photo shows maybe what it might look like if the chocolate was facing UP.

What if the chocolate bar faced UP when opened?
But what if the chocolate bar was facing UP when I opened the candy bar?  Doesn't
that seem much more visually appealing to you?

There you have it folks.  This my thought.  I really think that these chocolates SHOULD be FACING UP when I open the candy bar.  If the candy manufacturers are worried about THE FEEL when the customer first sees and touches the chocolate bar, then maybe they should have TWO FACES in the chocolate bars.  This way, they can still make sure the candy FEELS nice when picked up, but also LOOKS decent when customers like myself actually open the package to enjoy the chocolate.
My two cents.  What are YOUR thoughts?

Hi Mergen,

This is a really interesting point. I make chocolate and I've thought the same thing. I guess it's not that attractive to open up a bar and it's upside down, but when they're packaged they sit better when they are facing up. It's something to think about!

Paulina.

Hi @Paulina thanks for the comment. Do let me know if you do change your packaging. It will be interesting to hear results, if any. Cheers!

That's very interesting. Once I've thought about it too.
But. Where are you from? You write in English but the chocolate bar is from Russia.

@Purum thanks for the comment. How did you recognize the writing? Are you from our neighbor Russia? Interesting that you thought the same about the chocolate bar packaging.

I am a Mongolian who has spent his life in UB and Colorado almost 50/50. ;)

Meanwhile the instruction says:
«It's easy to open and close several times»
Yeah, I'm from Russia and I love this chocolate :)

LOL. The directions sound like something from a condom packaging: «It's easy to open and close several times»

I agree. This is some tasty chocolate.

I was never really into sweets before I came back to Mongolia. Here Mongolian people's diet consists largely of meat, flour, sugar, & vodka. Fruits are really expensive. I typically eat apples imported from Russia, but recently some were massive in size, leading me to question whether they were steroids-fed. hehe

Hey Mergen,

Interesting post. You might have to overcome the curvature of the chocolate bar on top (picture of your bar is down)to get a good seal. But... if you were to do that I think you could come up with some interesting pop-up or interactive designs for opening a chocolate bar from the top.
